Theresa A. Young
Theresa is the Director of Henry Street Settlement’s Helen’s House, a family shelter for homeless woman and children on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In addition to managing the day to day operations of the shelter, Theresa also runs a case management program that provides a rental subsidy and aftercare services for families who have resided at one of Henry Street Settlements shelters that aides’ families in their transition from shelter into permanent housing in communities throughout NYC and Westchester County. She serves as the DEI lead on Henry Street Settlements Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee which works to develop programs and initiatives that embed equity throughout the organization to better serve clients, staff and community through training, programs, and communications.
Theresa has also had experience working as a case worker for NYC Child Welfare Administration, and at Victim Services currently (Safe Horizons). She also worked as a social worker and group facilitator in Henry Street Settlement’s Domestic Violence Shelter, and as a Live In Social Worker and Staff Trainer in Henry Street Settlement’s Transitional and Supportive Housing Division.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, she has worked with several organizations as a volunteer and mentor with the stated goal to act as a change agent and influence policy that promotes gender equity in health, education, and economic empowerment improving the lives of black woman and girls. Theresa serves on the board of The National Coalition of 100 Black Woman-Manhattan Chapter as the VP of Membership and Professional Development and served on The Riverbay Fund’s Youth Committee and is an organizer for the CO OP City College Career and Resource Fair and is a Board member of It’s Kool2Bsmart, a nonprofit helping young in the northeast Bronx explore opportunities for secondary education and job training.
Theresa is currently a student in an Executive Master of Public Administration at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public Affairs. She also holds a master’s degree in social work from the Silberman School at Hunter College, and a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in Family and Community services. Additionally, Theresa has advanced training in Non-Profit Management from Columbia University and is an American Express/Black Agency Executive Fellow. In her spare time, Theresa enjoys experiencing new things through travel both domestically and internationally. She is an avid reader, loves R&B music, photography, and museums.
